KABOOSE

Dan Schubring - North Dakota - September 5th , 2023

By: Brennen Nading (@nadingbr)

Dan, Kyle and their crew of buddies headed up to North Dakota for a week-long trip to kick off the 2023 season.  Dan was excited to have an "Any Deer" tag in his pocket which meant he had the choice to hunt mule deer or whitetails.  On the first day of the season, the boys headed out to start glassing for mule deer.  As luck would have it, they would spot a big whitetail and watch him head for cover to bed.  Dan crept in and a doe ended up blowing their cover when the buck stood up.  Dan ended up sending an arrow but it was a clean miss.  A few days later, a cold front was welcomed with open arms.  Dan headed into a spot where a really nice buck had been showing up on camera consistently shortly after shooting light.  He figured with the weather front, he had a chance of catching the buck moving just a little bit earlier.  With high winds, the buck ended up sneaking in on them and he was at 20 yards before they even knew he was there.  Dan made a perfect shot and the deer ended up dying 20 yards from an old railroad track, hence the name "Kaboose".   Just a beautiful velvet buck, Dan's personal best.
